Biblical Cosmology…part one

“So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Yashar? Thus the sun stopped in the midst of the heavens, and did not hasten to go down for an entire day.” – Joshua 10:13

What is biblical cosmology?

I’m glad you asked. The Oxford Learners dictionary definition for cosmology: “The scientific study of the universe and its origin and development.”

Biblical cosmology, then, would be the study of the nature and origin of the universe through a Biblical lens. Biblical cosmology would entail topics such as the origin and length of creation, age of the universe, and of course, shape and structure of the world in which we live.

Many Christians probably don’t give this topic much thought or even think it is relevant to the faith. I was once one of those. It seemed interesting, but also something that might be a distraction. I did not pursue truth on this topic for quite some time.

Turns out Biblical Cosmology was one of the most powerful topics to help shape my faith (pun intended). Learning the truth about the cosmos opened up my faith and energized me like no other topic! Understanding Biblical Cosmology filled the gap with certain Scriptures and caused the text to jump out at me in several instances. And most importantly, I became more serious about how I approached the Scriptures as I realized Yahuah (the Father) is not just out there in some other dimension… but is much closer than we think!

“Thus said Yahuah, “The heavens are My throne, and the earth is My footstool.” – Isaiah 66:1

Scripture versus Science?

Most Christians are already at odds with the “scientific” community. I use quotation marks because I believe much of what we consider “science” could more accurately be described as “scientism.” Roughly, scientism is the view that the so-called hard sciences of biology, astronomy, geology, cosmology, etc., provide the only genuine knowledge of reality. But for those who truly study Scripture, we could not disagree more.

“Let it not be! But let Elohim be true, and every man a liar…” – Romans 3:4

Science should be a systematic approach to understanding while using observable, testable, and repeatable experimentation to understand how nature commonly behaves. But much of today’s science is a religion that men cannot question. In fact, I came across these pushbacks in my questioning of the world in which we live…

  • That the earth is only 6,000 years old.
  • That the earth was created in six literal days.
  • That the earth was not formed by a ‘Big Bang.’
  • That we were made in His image and not evolved from apes.
  • That the earth is stationary, flat, and enclosed by a firmament, and is the center of creation.

Most Christians may disagree with “science” over the first four topics. But when it comes to the last one, they are quick to get on board with the secular world. We’ve been conditioned since birth to believe that we live on a globe orbiting a sun, in a massive universe, surrounded by even larger galaxies. It puts Yahuah in some ethereal dimension far away from us. But He is close, and the writers of Scripture knew it!

“It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.” – Isaiah 40:22

He sits above the circle of the earth. Not a sphere, or a ball. But a circle. He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep (Proverbs 8:27) and the earth takes shape like clay under a seal (Job 38:14).

My suggestion to all you who seek truth on this matter…?

Let the Bible speak for itself.

There are hundreds of passages in Scripture that speak on this topic. But because of our conditioning we are quick to dismiss the issue. We claim that it isn’t “salvific”, so we ignore it. A lot of things in Scripture are not “salvific”, but we still study them!

Does the Bible often seem confusing? Read it for what it says instead of with the 21st-centrury bias we bring to the table. You think we know more than the writers of Scripture? We should not claim that it was written under the inspiration of the Set-Apart Holy Spirit if we believe that. Certain words and phrases are used for a reason and understanding our cosmos will ignite your understanding of Scripture and show you that intimacy with our Father.

References?

The late Rob Skiba was the first person to open my eyes on the matter, back in December of 2017. I still remember listening to him for the first time and shaking my head in disbelief. But Paul tells us to read the Scriptures DAILY, and with GREAT EAGERNESS (Acts 17:11). And so I did, which revealed the faith like never before!
